Seachem Matrix™ is a high-porosity inorganic solid designed to provide exceptionally efficient biofiltration for the removal of nitrogenous waste. Measuring approximately 10 mm in diameter, each liter of Matrix™ provides as much surface area as 170 liters of plastic bio-balls. Unlike traditional plastic media, Matrix™ features both external and internal macroporous surface area, providing the ideal environment for the colonization of both nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria.
Matrix™ is engineered to be the most versatile and long-lasting biological media available, capable of managing the entire nitrogen cycle in a single filter.
Simultaneous Waste Removal: The unique internal structure allows aerobic bacteria on the surface to process ammonia and nitrite, while anaerobic bacteria deep within the pores convert nitrate into harmless nitrogen gas.
Inert & Permanent: Unlike ceramic rings or plastic media that can degrade or clog over time, Matrix™ is a solid volcanic stone that will not break down and never needs to be replaced.
Superior Surface Area: Offers a massive amount of "living space" for beneficial bacteria, significantly increasing the bioload capacity of any filtration system.
Universal Compatibility: Perfectly suited for use in canister filters, sumps, hang-on-back filters, and even trickle systems.
Safe for All Systems: Completely non-toxic and chemically inert, it will not affect pH, GH, or KH in freshwater or marine aquariums.
How much Seachem Matrix™ do I need?
Use 250 mL of Matrix™ for every 200 L (50 US gallons) of water. It is highly effective when placed in a canister filter where water is forced through the media.
Does it need a filter bag?
In most canister and sump applications, Matrix™ is large enough to be used loose. However, using a media bag like The Bag can make maintenance and rinsing much easier.
How often should I clean it?
Since the majority of beneficial bacteria live inside the pores, you can safely rinse Matrix™ in tank water to remove debris without damaging the biological filter. It should never be replaced unless it is physically crushed.
Seachem Stability®: The essential companion for new setups; use alongside Matrix™ to rapidly establish a robust colony of beneficial bacteria.
Seachem Purigen®: The ultimate organic-removal resin to use as chemical filtration upstream from your Matrix™ to keep the pores clear of debris.
Seachem MatrixCarbon™: A high-capacity activated carbon that shares the "Matrix" name for its similar spherical, high-flow geometry.
